Speaker background:

Michael S. Sherber PE has over twenty years of experience in manufacturing, contracting and design of high performance HVAC equipment and systems.   He is nationally recognized for his expertise on indoor air quality, high performance HVAC system design, and evaporative cooling.  He was co-author of the 2000 Connecticut Academy of Sciences and Engineering (CASE) report to the Connecticut General Assembly that formed the basis for Connecticut’s 2003 school indoor air quality law.  He was the first engineer in the State of Connecticut to become a LEED-Accredited Professional in 2002.  Mr. Sherber has spoken frequently on high performance HVAC system design, evaporative cooling, and indoor air quality at US Dept. of Energy Rebuild America, NESEA and national ASHRAE events.  He designed the advanced HVAC systems for the first three LEED certifiable public schools in New Jersey. These systems actually cost less to build than typical non-high performance HVAC systems. Sherber understands the design, construction, and finance issues facing New Mexico building managers in their quest to comply with new energy conservation goals.

Presentation:

During the presentation, Mr. Sherber will explain the innovative hybrid, dual duct HVAC system he designs.  One of Sherber’s projects that will be discussed is a high school in Wassau, WI, that was upgraded to the new hybrid dual duct HVAC system in 2005.  The results of this upgrade were compared to a mirror image school nearby that uses a traditional HVAC system.  The new system resulted in a net annual energy cost savings of $164,000 in 2005 dollarsThe added benefit was a lower rate of student and staff absenteeism, as this new system delivers FRESH air instead of recirculating existing, germ-laden air.  With air entering and exiting the HVAC system at a single point, protection from unwanted contamination is easily managed.
