“Meeting Humanity’s Greatest Challenge”:

Global Warming and Smart Architecture

Examined at September Meeting

Internationally recognized architect Ed Mazria has a pretty good hunch about the cause of a problem that may threaten the survival of Planet Earth as we know it.

As summarized in his articles “It’s the Architecture, Stupid!” and also reported inEdward Mazria “Metropolis Magazine”, he points out the architect’s role in global warming though flawed concepts in facility design.

The architectural design of all of the buildings in the United States and their associated energy consumption are responsible for the most significant sector of greenhouse gas emissions.  These emissions impact global warming.  Mazria stands in the forefront of sustainable building design concepts.

Come network with the New Mexico Facility Managers Network in a joint meeting with the New Mexico Association of Energy Engineers and the American Society of Heating Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers on Wednesday, September 15th, at the Albuquerque Petroleum Club at 5:30 pm for a spirited discussion about the role of architecture as it relates to the important problem of global warming.

Anyone who manages, utilizes, or designs a building and believes there is hope for lessening this impact on the environment should attend.

Space is limited; reserve now.  NMFMN members,  rsvp to Carolee by email at carolee@nmfmn.com or by calling 505-331-2477.  NMAEE and ASHRAE members, please contact your program chairman.

The NMFMN 2004 Golf Tournament Is in the books

10th Anniversary Golf Event Exceeds Expectations:

Member Support and Isleta Eagle Course Exemplary!

With one hundred sixteen players, more door prizes than contenders, and a perfect day on a beautiful golf course, the 10th Anniversary New Mexico Facility Managers Network golf celebration is one for the record books.

All 18 holes were sponsored, as were the buffet table and the beverage services for the event, reflecting the depth of member support for the non-profit organization which funds an engineering scholarship at the University of New Mexico.

The icing on the cake was the picture perfect Isleta Eagle Golf Course and ideal weather conditions.

From player registration at 7 am to the awarding of abundant door prizes for all (in addition to the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th place teams’ prizes), the whole show ran smoothly, supported by Mother Nature and a host of tireless volunteers.

Loyal member support made the day!  Heartfelt thanks to each and every participant!

Once again, Public Service Company of New Mexico has underwritten the event.  Proceeds go to support the endowment of an engineering scholarship at the University of New Mexico.

Executive Director’s Column

Huge numbers of thank-yous go out to everyone who, once again, helped put our annual golf outing and scholarship fund-raiser over the top.

Dave Magee from Britton Construction was integral by helping me with the pairings and in providing the classic “Furthest from First” award to the last place team at the game’s end.

Other dedicated helpers included Jennifer House with Staffing Solutions; Maria Haak with Dimensions Flooring Services; Ed Cook and Ray Costales from Service Master by Brown; Christy Smith from CH2 M Hill; Evelyn Dow-Simpson from TVI Community College; Grace Getler and Cathy Crismore with Maintenance Service Systems; Brian Werling with the Koroseal Interior Products Group; Mark Veseth with Business Environments; Lawson Product’s Debra Wilson; and ABQ Engineering’s Kirk Benton.

Facility Manager Paul Petree with Cabot Superior Micro Powders and generous suppliers Rick Johnson and Jerry Gaines with Voss Lighting handed out sleeve after sleeve of golf balls to all participants, as Jerald Warwick with Hagemayer North America donated “Golfer First Aid Kits” to the players.

Special thanks to New Mexico Facility Managers Network board member Joseph Rodriguez who co-coordinated the show with the beautiful Isleta Eagle Championship Golf Course and managed to feed the masses on breakfast burritos at 7 am.

Golf 2004 is on the books as a memorable, successful event
