10th Annual NMFMN Golf Tourney and Scholarship Drive is gearing up.

10th Annual Benefit Golf Tournament

Golf’s Going Good

But Time is Tight

With the August 13th date on the radar screen, holes are selling out fast for the special “10th Anniversary New Mexico Facility Managers Network Golf Tournament and Scholarship Drive”.

“Holes, half-holes, and one-third holes are still available, but we expect this year to be a sold-out affair,” said Brad Sims, NMFMN’s vice president and treasurer.  “The Isleta Eagle Golf Course is a real treat to play on, and this will attract more golfers than ever!”

The “cherry on the top” of the popular event is always the massive door prize give-away at the end of the tournament.  “Last year I handed out almost 100 door prizes, everything from beautiful Nambe bowls to dinners for two at popular restaurants,” added Carolee Griffin, Executive Director for the group.

“So everyone wins!  You don’t have to be on the winning team to take home a prize!”

The game is open to both members and non-members alike, and players of all abilities can enjoy the game in the best-ball, scramble format.

Once again, Public Service Company of New Mexico has underwritten the event.  Proceeds go to support the endowment of an engineering scholarship at the University of New Mexico.

Sign up today!  The best way is to go online to golf@nmfmn.com or use the form provided in this newsletter.  Reservation deadline is July 30, 2004.  Questions?  Call Carolee at 505-331-2477.

Designing on Purpose:

Building Commissioning

Provides Verification

“The goal of building commissioning is to improve the transition from design and construction into building management and maintenance,” summarized Ralph Wrons, facility and energy engineer for Sandia National Laboratories, at the May meeting of the New Mexico Facility Managers Network.

“It is important to get a commissioning plan together at a phase early in the project, but the true success depends on excellent follow-through,” he said.

In a joint meeting with the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air-Conditioning Engineers, Wrons shared his considerable experience with making sure that buildings are functional, maintainable, and efficient, gleaned from his work at the demanding federal government laboratory in Albuquerque.

“Building commissioning is not a substitute for good, up-front design work, however.  The construction process must include testing, verification, and documentation every step of the way to make sure the owner’s needs are met.”

In addition to heating and air conditioning systems, commissioning also looks at roofing, vapor barriers, and door hardware, telecom, access control and intrusion alarm systems, electrical and life-safety equipment, as well as fire/sprinkler systems, emergency lighting, and grounding.  Inspectors make sure what was planned is executed.

“”In the end, money spent on commissioning can be recouped in the efficiencies the building’s systems will reveal over the long run.  It is a journey worth taking.”

Our Golf Tournament Gears Up Again—

Mark your calendar TODAY for Friday, August 13th, 2004’s “10th Anniversary New Mexico Facility Managers Network Golf Tournament and Scholarship Fundraiser”.  Isleta Eagle Championship Golf Course will host our event this year, tee time set for 8 am with 7 am range balls and breakfast burritos in the works!

I had over one hundred golfers play last year, and I expect a sell-out this year!  The money from the event goes to endow an engineering scholarship at the University of New Mexico.

But beyond that, WE HAVE FUN!  I gave away at least 100 door prizes last year so if you play, you will win SOMETHING!

But I still need hole sponsors, lots more golfers (why don’t you field a foursome?), and companies to donate door prizes.  Or, call me to volunteer to help on the day of the event!

When a member of my “Golf Gang” calls you, just say YES!  And we’ll see you on Friday, August 13, at the beautiful Isleta Eagle Golf Course!

PNM Educational Seminars

Continue on June 17th

Running an electric motor is a major electrical expense for the average industrial or commercial facility.  Effective motor management is vital in today’s competitive environment.

Another opportunity for improvement in a building’s “bottom line” exists in improving the lighting system.  The increase in energy efficiency over the last 20 years is phenomenal.

Both of these critical topics will be addressed PNM’s 2004 Energy Academy Series entitled “Cost Effective Energy Management”.  The seminars are free of charge but YOU MUST REGISTER NOW for the classes.

To sign up, call Peggy Schmidt at PNM at 505-241-4473, fax her at 505-241-4369, or email her at pschmid@pnm.com.  Space is limited for these important seminars so register today!

From The President of NMFMN

Dear Members:

At our Board’s annual planning session in January, we assessed the organization’s work for 2003 and set our course for 2004.  I’d like to share the results of that session with you.   The Board of Directors committed to these priorities for 2004:

1.        Focus on recruiting more facility managers as members.

2.        Ensure that our meeting programs have content that will help facility managers be more effective on their jobs.  Adopting the theme “Increase Your Depth of Knowledge,” we also are working on other formats for educational opportunities for members and their facility staffs.

3.        Develop a Board rotation and succession plan to strengthen the organization and offer more opportunities for service for those who are interested.

We welcome participation from all members in recruiting new facility manager members, in suggestions for programs to increase depth of knowledge in facility management, and your expressions of interest in being of service to the organization.

These 2004 goals are built on our successes in 2003.  Here are the 2003 highlights, in chronological order:

1.        Sponsored the Facilities and Buildings Operations and Maintenance Show for the second year.  Growing in exhibitors, attendees and outreach, the FAB O&M show brings together a vast array of resources to serve the facility manager.

2.        Increased communication with American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), with whom we share the May meeting, and with the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE), which shares the September meeting with NMNFM and ASHRAE.

3.        Attracted the second largest turnout in NMFMN history at the 9th Annual Golf Tournament in August. Always filled with fun, friendly competition, good fellowship, and good contacts, the tournament serves the greater purpose of funding the Engineering Scholarship at the University of New Mexico.

4.        Contributed $5,000.00, raised from the Golf Tournament, to the Scholarship Endowment at UNM for deserving engineering students.  This brought the total for the NMFMN Endowment to over $22,000.00!

All of these successes were possible only because of your support and involvement, the work of our energetic Executive Director, and the dedication of our Board of Directors.  Thank you all

                                                                                                                                Mary Anne Giangola
