Will
the U.S. Survive the “New Terrorism”?
If You Only Make One
2004 NMFMN Event, January’s Speaker Presents Critical
Information:
Dr.
Richard W. Burcham has nearly forty years of operational and
support anti- and counter-terrorism experience. Rarely
does the general public have access to a speaker who is this
distinguished and eminently qualified.
The
infrastructure of the United States of America is fraught with
failure modes that represent potentially mortal vulnerabilities.
The survivability of this infrastructure must be addressed in
its totality and not on a piecemeal basis because of the myriad
interdependencies of the various industries comprising the
nation’s support systems.
Hardening of this national infrastructural system against these
vulnerabilities should be receiving priority attention at all
levels of government, according to Dr. Burcham, a renowned
analyst and senior member of the technical staff at Sandia
National Laboratories in Albuquerque.
What must we do to assure America’s invincibility in the “Global
War on Terrorism” which is being waged circuitously though overt
and clandestine attacks on all aspects of the combatant nations?
Dr.
Burcham will discuss some of the problems the nation must
overcome if it to survive the challenges of a twenty-first
century “Strategic Indirect War”.
You
must hear Dr. Burcham address this crucial topic. Please
make your reservations early by calling Carolee at 505-331-2477
or emailing
carolee@nmfmn.com or faxing 505-771-2484. Seating is
limited and you must have a reservation.
The meeting is
Wednesday, January 21st, 2004, at the Albuquerque Petroleum
Club, beginning at 5:30 pm

10th Anniversary Meeting Celebrates Member
Support;
UNM Scholarship Fund Reaps the Rewards
“You
make a real difference in a student’s academic future, and in
their life,” said Tim Davis, Engineering Development Chairman
from the University of New Mexico, addressing 75 members and
guests of the New Mexico Facility Managers Network at the
“2nd
Annual “Regulator’s Breakfast”.
“Thank you, over and over again.”
The
free breakfast has become a yearly event, celebrating the
continued success of the organization whose greater goal is to
endow an engineering scholarship at the University of New
Mexico.
In
the last three years, the group has grown in financial strength,
due to increased membership numbers and greater associate
participation. The outcome? Over $13,500.00 in donations
to the scholarship fund.
Much of the credit for this success is given to the financial
stewardship of Vice President/Treasurer, Brad Sims. He is
supported the by aggressive recruitment and member retention
efforts from Executive Director Carolee Griffin, the marketing
force for the organization.
Mary Anne Giangola, President, commented during her “10 Year
Retrospective” presentation: “We started in 1993 with 8
members and 30 people at our fundraiser golf tournament.
This year we have over 100 member companies, and almost 120
folks played golf.”
Giangola is among the founding members who attended the
commemorative meeting, along with Rich Braziel from PMN, Bobby
Holt with Honeywell DAS, Kirk Benton with Honeywell BC, and Kim
Trinosky, Honeywell DAS, who still serves on the NMFMN board.

Also on hand were state and city regulatory personnel who play
various roles in sustaining facility management efforts.
To
thank the crowd further, over 30 door prizes, generously donated
by member companies, went home with the celebrants after their
complimentary breakfast.
“We
have solid footing and the future is bright,” commented Sims.
“The backing this group receives from its members is
overwhelming! We wanted to thank them again for their
support,” he concluded.

Executive
Director’s Corner
Please come to the January meeting!
I have the privilege of meeting and booking some really
important and interesting people in the course of doing my
job as Executive Director for the New Mexico Facility
Managers Network. My speaker for the 21st of this
month has one of the most significant topics we have ever
addressed.
Over lunch at a modest barbeque restaurant, Dr. Dick Burcham
explained to me what “Strategic Indirect Warfare” is all
about. In essence, terrorists will exploit our own
weaknesses and leverage our lack of communication to bring
us down. Further, they will use our own facilities against
us in ways we can and cannot imagine.
Just as the power to use our planes to fly into buildings
and ability to utilize the post office to disseminate
anthrax has already been demonstrated, more is yet to come.
What must we do to be prepared for these eventualities? It
is a question that not only affects people who manage
infrastructural utilities and facilities; it is a topic of
the gravest concern to ALL Americans.
Mark your calendar today and call me to reserve. Please
spread the word and bring guests with you. It is not often
that someone like Dr, Burcham is available to speak to the
general public, and if you miss this meeting, you will have
missed a great opportunity.
That said, see you on Wednesday, January 21st, at the
Petroleum Club
Oh and by the way: Happy Holidays and a Successful New Year
to us all!

Is YOUR Emergency Planning Program Current?
Free Software and
Training Materials are Available
Facility managers in Bernalillo County must submit data about
emergency contact information, emergency preparedness, and
chemical stockpiles, a mandate first issued by the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency.
These files, which must be submitted electronically, are then
shared with various state, city and county agencies whose
interest lies in helping protect first responders and the
general public.
How
up-to-date are YOU in understanding and filing these necessary
documents? The cut-off date for filing is March 1st,
2004. Please contact the Local Emergency Planning Committee’s
representative Therese Martinez-Loner at 505-768-1970 or email
her at tloner@cabq.gov if
you are interested in obtaining the software and materials, or
have other general questions about these important papers.
