Questions About Energy Management, Cooling Systems, And More Answered at PNM’s Free August 12th Seminar

The cost and maintenance of a building’s cooling system is of major concern for the manager of any type of facility.  Close behind it is the management and understanding of the energy management control system in the facility.  Finally, how to design and/or retro fit the building’s envelope for cost savings?

Learn the answers to these and other important questions at a seminar presented by the Public Service Company of New Mexico on Thursday, August 12th, at the Sheraton Uptown Hotel.  Taught by a well-known instructor in energy management, the course is free but you must register in advance.

To sign up, please call Peggy Schmidt at 505-241-4473; fax her at 505-241-4369; or email her at pschmid@pnm.com Continental breakfast and lunch are provided but space is limited!  Register today!

Saving Water for the Future:

Xeriscaping’s Time Is Now

“Xeriscaping is a holistic approach to site preservation, “ said George Radnovich, president of the New Mexico Xeriscape Council.  “Our goal is to limit waste and recycle materials, keeping in mind a ‘sense of place’.”

“This is a desert.  Desert plants and materials are what this place is about.”

Facility managers in New Mexico, like the forty guests who attended the July meeting, are challenged with many local ordinances mandating water preservation.  These ordinances include storm water prevention plans, site wastewater reclamation, and a law stating that parking lots must be at least 15% landscaped to cut down on glare and heat.

With the drought gripping the west officially the worst in 500 years, xeriscaping is a necessity.

Implementation strategies include the use of wicking systems to hold water in place in soils, building cisterns, understanding the site hydrology, layering plants to create micro-systems, re-vegetating areas, and landscaping with indigenous grasses.

Additionally, managers of federal buildings must also adhere to another set of guidelines named “LEED”—Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design.

“A return on investment can be realized in about three to six years,” Radnovich concluded, “but the real savings in actual water use can be as much as 66%.”

Radnovich heads a company named “Sites Southwest” whose project credits include the “MESA Project” at Sandia National Laboratories, “@25”, a commercial/business development center, and “The Pavillions”, a shopping center, all in Albuquerque.

Executive Director’s Column

Calling All Carts:

Golfer Alert, Dead Ahead!

If you have not signed up to play in the New Mexico Facility Managers Network Tenth Anniversary Golf Tournament, DO IT TODAY!

Not much of a golfer, you say?  Since we play in a best-ball format, you will be paired with someone who is, leveling the field for victory!

I can accommodate up to 144 duffers, so you still have time to slip in under the wire but TIME IS RUNNING OUT!

If you are a supplier who wants to put in a foursome of your own, this is definitely possible, but you must call me for details.

Then------ about DOORPRIZES!  I still need more!

Company-branded logo items are always welcome but major points are scored for certificates for two for dinner, movie passes, any golf-related item, airline tickets to Maui, or just anything I can hand out during the barbeque following the tourney.  If you call me, I will pick it up, or just bring it with you on the day of the outing.  I promise to publicize your company in return!

Remember, the tournament is Friday, August 13th, at the beautiful, challenging Isleta Eagle Golf Course.  Call me today at 505-331-2477 and together we can make this the one to remember!

From The President of NMFMN

Dear Members:

At our Board’s annual planning session in January, we assessed the organization’s work for 2003 and set our course for 2004.  I’d like to share the results of that session with you.   The Board of Directors committed to these priorities for 2004:

1.        Focus on recruiting more facility managers as members.

2.        Ensure that our meeting programs have content that will help facility managers be more effective on their jobs.  Adopting the theme “Increase Your Depth of Knowledge,” we also are working on other formats for educational opportunities for members and their facility staffs.

3.        Develop a Board rotation and succession plan to strengthen the organization and offer more opportunities for service for those who are interested.

We welcome participation from all members in recruiting new facility manager members, in suggestions for programs to increase depth of knowledge in facility management, and your expressions of interest in being of service to the organization.

These 2004 goals are built on our successes in 2003.  Here are the 2003 highlights, in chronological order:

1.        Sponsored the Facilities and Buildings Operations and Maintenance Show for the second year.  Growing in exhibitors, attendees and outreach, the FAB O&M show brings together a vast array of resources to serve the facility manager.

2.        Increased communication with American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), with whom we share the May meeting, and with the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE), which shares the September meeting with NMNFM and ASHRAE.

3.        Attracted the second largest turnout in NMFMN history at the 9th Annual Golf Tournament in August. Always filled with fun, friendly competition, good fellowship, and good contacts, the tournament serves the greater purpose of funding the Engineering Scholarship at the University of New Mexico.

4.        Contributed $5,000.00, raised from the Golf Tournament, to the Scholarship Endowment at UNM for deserving engineering students.  This brought the total for the NMFMN Endowment to over $22,000.00!

All of these successes were possible only because of your support and involvement, the work of our energetic Executive Director, and the dedication of our Board of Directors.  Thank you all

                                                                                                                                Mary Anne Giangola
