Attention All Facility Managers and Employees:
YOUR Trade Show is
Coming April 7th and 8th!
The
only show in the state supporting facility managers, facility
engineers, building owners, and their staffs is coming to the
Manual Lujan Exhibition Hall on the New Mexico State Fairgrounds
on Wednesday, April 7th, and Thursday, April 8th.
Dubbed “The Facility and Buildings Operations and Maintenance
Show”, a special feature of the 2004 venue is the important
addition of four certified educational seminars.
The
seminars include ladder safety, personal protective equipment,
hand tool safety, and forklift safety. These are topics where
continuous reinforcement is critical to the employees who
facilitate the operation of buildings.
Attendees who successfully complete an educational session will
receive certificate.
Beyond the educational element, here is a chance for facility
managers to see the latest and greatest in tools, technologies,
and services, which help them to run safe, efficient,
cost-conscious, and continuously improving buildings.
Over 100 supplier booths have already been sold.
“The fact that we all must do more with less for our properties
makes attendance at this show a must,” commented Brad Sims,
Facility Engineer for the Villa Linda Mall in Santa Fe, NM.
“This is one-stop shopping at its best!”
Admission and parking is FREE for the event, which runs from 9
am to 5 pm daily.
Need more information? Contact the show’s producer, Al
Reynolds with ASR and Associates at 505-880-0123.

Recent State Legislative Session Generally
Good For Business: Progress Continues
“Though the session was only 30 days long, Governor Richardson
fostered passage of initiatives that will benefit New Mexico’s
business climate,” concluded speaker J.D. Bullington at the
March 17th New Mexico Facility Managers meeting.
Bullington
is a lobbyist who works for the Association of Commerce and
Industry, effectively the Chamber of Commerce at the state
level. He is also a newspaper columnist and popular
commentator.
“Of
the 1400 bills brought before the houses, we only asked that he
veto two.”
Issues addressed in this year’s session included the ongoing
battle to get more funds for Medicaid. Counted as victories
were the creation of a cabinet-level Secretary of Education,
replacing the old state school board, and the initiation of
tough new truancy laws for the schools to utilize.
New
economic development incentives for both urban and rural areas
also hold promise.
Among bills that were defeated were the passage of an additional
personal income tax cut, and new safety standards to protect
convenience store workers, which could be applied rigorously
onto other businesses. Also denied was the passage of a
mandatory additive in anti-freeze products which would give them
a bitter taste.
New
Mexico made national headlines when it defeated an
anti-globalization anti-outsourcing bill.
Water issues continue to be a source of friction, with urban
needs vs. rural needs at the center of the debate. Although DWI
arrests continue to soar with Bernalillo County alone logging
more than 7,000 last year, both houses defeated a bill asking
for a mandatory ignition interlock on all vehicles preventing
inebriated drivers from operating them.
Bullington also touched on the repeal of the food tax, union
activity, and commented on the political atmosphere in the
state.
“Bill Richardson is the most prominent Hispanic politico in
government,” he concluded. “He knows how things work, and
enjoys being at the heart of the process. He is an asset to New
Mexico.”

From The President of NMFMN
Dear Members:

At our Board’s annual planning session in
January, we assessed the organization’s work for 2003 and set
our course for 2004. I’d like to share the results of that
session with you. The Board of Directors committed to these
priorities for 2004:
1.
Focus on recruiting more facility managers as members.
2.
Ensure that our meeting programs have content that will
help facility managers be more effective on their jobs.
Adopting the theme “Increase Your Depth of Knowledge,” we also
are working on other formats for educational opportunities for
members and their facility staffs.
3.
Develop a Board rotation and succession plan to
strengthen the organization and offer more opportunities for
service for those who are interested.
We welcome participation from all members
in recruiting new facility manager members, in suggestions for
programs to increase depth of knowledge in facility management,
and your expressions of interest in being of service to the
organization.
These 2004 goals are built on our successes
in 2003. Here are the 2003 highlights, in chronological order:
1.
Sponsored the Facilities and Buildings Operations and
Maintenance Show for the second year. Growing in exhibitors,
attendees and outreach, the FAB O&M show brings together a vast
array of resources to serve the facility manager.
2.
Increased communication with American Society of Heating,
Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), with whom
we share the May meeting, and with the Association of Energy
Engineers (AEE), which shares the September meeting with NMNFM
and ASHRAE.
3.
Attracted the second largest turnout in NMFMN history at
the 9th Annual Golf Tournament in August. Always
filled with fun, friendly competition, good fellowship, and good
contacts, the tournament serves the greater purpose of funding
the Engineering Scholarship at the University of New Mexico.
4.
Contributed $5,000.00, raised from the Golf Tournament,
to the Scholarship Endowment at UNM for deserving engineering
students. This brought the total for the NMFMN Endowment to
over $22,000.00!
All of these successes were possible only
because of your support and involvement, the work of our
energetic Executive Director, and the dedication of our Board of
Directors. Thank you all
Mary Anne Giangola
